N. C. S. R. Demokritos (Greece)
The National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” is the oldest and largest research facility in Greece. It covers a wide gamut of scientific research from Nuclear Technology to microelectronics and material science. The Institute of Nuclear Technology evolved over the years conducting research by means of the 5 MW research reactor it operates. Parallel related activities include environmental and energy research. Among other facilities Neutron Activation Analysis has been developed for atmospheric aerosol elemental analysis. Within the Institute, the Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory operates the nationwide environmental radioactivity control network. Monitoring activities include aerosol sampling and analysis for ambient radioactivity. At present modern sampling and analytical techniques for the study of aerosol physicochemical properties are available. These include High and Low Volume sampling systems for TSP, size fractionated aerosol sampling by means of cascade impactors and denuder/filter pack systems for TSP aerosol and equilibrium trace gases.
INTRP-NCSR Demokritos has conducted experimental and theoretical work on heat and mass transfer phenomena associated with aerosol formation and transport in closed ducts. Much of this work has been performed in collaboration with JRC-Ispra, including use of primary circuit codes and analytical developments. INTRP has also developed extensive expertise in physical modelling and computer simulation matters.
Principal Scientific Personnel:
- Dr. Eleftheriadis [Degree in Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 1987, MSc 1988, PhD 1993 University of Essex], has obtained significant experience in many aspects of aerosol physics and chemistry during the last 12 years He was primarily involved in the design and development of aerosol instrumentation, application of chemical speciation techniques on aerosol samples and extensive analyses of mainly experimental data. He is currently involved in research work concerning atmospheric aerosol physico-chemical properties. Dr Eleftheriadis has collaborated in many International programmes. Such programmes include the study for Marine deposition of Nitrogen species over the North Sea during 1992-1993 and the E.U. funded Mediterranean Photochemical tracers campaign (MEDCAPHOT-TRACE) in 1994. During 1998 Dr. Eleftheriadis has been the primary Investigator in two E.U. funded TMR/LSF projects, conducted at the STAAARTE research aircraft and the Ny-Aalesund Arctic Environmental research facilities.
- Dr Housiadas [Diploma, mechanical engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), 1983; PhD, mechanics, University of Grenoble (INPG), 1987] is a research scientist working in the areas of reactor safety, accident analysis, and computer modelling. He is involved in the operation of the 5 MW research reactor of "Demokritos". Also, he is a member of the Emergency Management Expert Group of the Greek Atomic Energy Commission. His research interests include thermal-hydraulics and neutronics for accident analyses and noise investigations, as well as transport phenomena in aerosol flows. He has an extensive experience of 14 years in nuclear engineering research. He has worked at European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, Ispra for 6 years, and at the French CEA for 4 years.
A post-doctoral fellow with experience in aerosol science and instrumentation will be contracted for the needs of the project.
