The computers available at Prof. G. Kallos group will be used for the model simulations. Currently there is a parallel system IBM/SP2 with peak performance of 3 GFLOPS, an HP parallel computer (J5000) with peak performance of 3.5 GFLOPS and a number of other workstations available (e.g. IBM-RS6000/3BT, HP-9000/712, HP/C200 and a number of high-end PCs with PENTIUM-III at 4500 MHZ in clustering mode for parallel applications). A number of other equipment such as printers, scanners, storage systems etc. is also available. A fully developed high speed switched local area network (LAN) is connecting all the computers available in the group. This network allows the better utilization of the computer power available, especially for parallel applications. A fast line connects the computer facilities of the Group with the University Campus and the other world. A direct access to the ECMWF for data retrieval is also available.

This group has been awarded several research grants and projects from various organisations, such as:

This group has been awarded a project from General Secretary for Research and Technology (GSRT) and the European Commission in order to implement the National Weather Forecasting system in Greece (PI G. Kallos). The product of this project is the Regional Weather Forecasting System "SKIRON" which is based on the Eta/NCEP model (2 MECU). It is in operational use at the Hellenic National Meteorological Service and at the University of Athens (http://forecast.uoa.gr). It has been also in use (research and operations) in several Universities or Research Institutes world wide (15 installations until now). One of the capabilities of the SKIRON system is the one simulating the dust cycle (uptake-transport-deposition). This development has been made at the framework of MEDUSE and SKIRON projects. It is the unique model which provides dust load and deposition forecasts world wide. New development on the system is under way for the simulation of the mercury cycle (Project MAMCS funded from DG-XII of EU). The group has also a participation at project CARL funded by DG-XII of EU (simulations of cloud formation).

Prof. G. Kallos and his group was awarded a sub-project of the "Modeling and analysis of Ozone and its precursors in the North East USA" project (NARSTO). More specifically, this group has performed nested model simulations with RAMS over the East part of USA for several months (contract # 320-6909A with SUNY at Albany).

Dr. G. Kallos acts as Associate Assistant Professor at the University of Athens, Department of Applied Physics with a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Geophysical Sciences (U.S.A). Dr Kallos has 45 publications in scientific journals, 81 publications in conference proceedings, and 63 other publications in subjects related to atmospheric physics and chemistry. Most of them are related to atmospheric modelling. Several studies using CSU/RAMS and SKIRON/Eta models have been undertaken during the last fifteen years. Prof. G. Kallos has participated in 50 projects externally funded and he has been Principal Investigator in 27 of them until now.
